Marie Mills has been volunteering for over 16 years. She started volunteering at Broadbeach State School as a way to get involved in her children’s school community.
“I continue to volunteer as It makes me feel worthwhile and part of an extended family community. It’s wonderful meeting people from all walks of life” She said.
Marie now volunteers her time at the Gold Coast Airport as an Airport Ambassador; welcoming international and domestic guests to the Gold Coast. She helps them find their gates, direct them to lost property and provide support if their planes leave without them.
She was inspired to become an Airport Ambassador after an experience she had in airport in Rome where she was trying to find her gate.
“If there had been no one to help direct us to the right gate I reckon we would still be there surrounded by other tourists,” she playfully said.
One of Marie’s most memorable moments is from her very first shift assisting a distressed mother who had left her phone on the bus. She remembers how excited and grateful the mother was when she eventually tracked down the phone.
“It really is amazing how much support you provide during one shift,” she said.
Marie says she looks forward to coming in every Friday to volunteer and meeting with the other team members who have all become great friends.
“It’s wonderful to be able to share my knowledge of the Gold Coast to guests when arriving or to help those that are leaving. Volunteering has been a great way for me to meet like-minded people and give back. I’ve even encouraged my daughter to join the volunteering team!”
