By August 12, 2019 No Comments

The seventh annual National Student Volunteer Week (NSVW) will commence Monday August 12 and continue through to Sunday August 18 2019. This is a celebration that promotes, builds support and encourage change for students volunteering in organisations across the whole of Australia.

During the week a variety of Events and activities hosted by higher education providers and schools will be held across Australia. This is to create realisation that the young generation are the next innovators of change and creative minds of the community with this year’s theme ‘Challenge yourself, Be the change, Celebrate Each Other’ illustrating just that.

NSVW and Volunteering Services Australia (VSA) share common values on professional development which is to ensure students gain valuable work experience, build industry connections and networks. The VSA marketing department collaborates with Griffith University to take on students in the marketing field through the university’s Community Internship course.

“Volunteering improves student’s basic communication and industrial skills, it tests their capability of critical thinking and leads them to a pathway of opportunities,” Said Simon Nugus, C.E.O of Volunteering Service Australia.

“I applaud Griffith University for the initiative they have taken for giving both local and international students an opportunity to volunteer through the Community Internship Program.”

Volunteering enables students to interact with diverse cultures which increases creativity, widens range of skills and also improves cultural diversity.

“Being an international student from Nairobi, Kenya never in a million years would I imagine myself experiencing the Australian work force. I decided to venture beyond my comfort zone and enrolled in the Community Internship. The opportunity is amazing and am learning every day, now more than ever. I believe nothing is impossible until its done” said Glory Kimorori, Griffith University student and VSA Volunteer.
