Connie Canale has been volunteering at Co. As. It Community Services for 15 years and shows no sign of stopping anytime soon.
“Volunteering has always been a part of my life. Now I am 72 years old, still very active and hope to keep going for as long as I can,” she said.
Her role as a volunteer is to assist at the organisation’s Gold Coast Day Centre for aged care, where she supports clients with daily activities.
“My role is to ensure that clients have a safe and enjoyable time when visiting the centre. This includes assisting them with outings and daily activities, such as bingo, as well as serving them tea and lunch,” she said.
Volunteering has been a rewarding experience for Connie, who believes that the strong connection she has built with the centre clients has been the highlight of it all.
“The clients start to worry when I’m away and make sure I don’t forget to come back whenever I go on holidays. I can see that they appreciate the work I do for them,” she said.
She encourages everyone who is thinking about becoming a volunteer to take the next step.
“Volunteering has enriched my life, I feel that I get more out of volunteering than what I give,” she said.
“If you are looking to give back to the community, then give volunteering a go.”
